The duet was formed in 2009 and is one of the most distinctive independent music bands in Poznań. The members of the band are Wojciech Bąkowski (author of lyrics, music and an acknowledged visual artist of younger generation) and Dawid Szczęsny (musician, producer). So far Niwea released two records 01 (2007) and 02 (2011) which draw on the achievements of new wave, gloomy electronic music, the atmosphere of the 1980s and 90s as well as the developing hybrid trend of post-rap - applicable here to the form of articulation (in between rap and melodeclamation). Niwea pointedly elevates everyday reality, seeing in it poetry and a backdrop for existential reflection. As Michał Lasota from Galeria Stereo writes: “Bąkowski and Szczęsny make a performative anti-sculpture from shortage, from a hole left after their presence - music and text, like air, fill this empty place left after them. Niwea moves with bravado towards a dead serious cabaret in which the theatrical deceit and truth balance in the right ratio, which is almost unbearable.
The band became famous for its unconventional compositions in which the elements of dance music create a cold, existential atmosphere. Unique lyrics by Bąkowski, marked by realism expressed in abstract narratives, drew particular attention of the audience. Unapproachable stage image and scarce, conceptual music videos won Niwea a narrow, though faithful group of fans. At present, the band members prepare their solo albums. Private Behaviour by Szczęsny, who performs under a pseudonym Normal Echo, will be released in October this year, while Kształt by Bąkowski already in May. Launching solo careers does not mean the end of the band’s activities. On 28 June 2013 Niwea will perform along with Kraftwerk in Poznań Gasworks (Gazownia) during Malta Festival Poznań and will present the material from both albums together with some first-night pieces, unpublished before.
