  • While writing The House of Bernarda Alba in 1936, Federico Garcia Lorca dealt with demons which he faced on a daily basis as a misfit rejected by conservative society. One can find in the drama distinct elements of reflection on entanglement in social roles, which often— especially in small, closed communities — obscure the sense of existence. In that respect, Lorca’s vision resembles that known from the late films of Buñuel, in particular from The Exterminating Angel. The figure of a closed house in the story of Alba sisters gains significance especially as regards the microcosm of family relationships and emotions hidden under the veil of correctness. Toxic relationships between the unmarried women, connected with one another, seem alarmingly relevant.
