  • Silent Malta - Channel 1 consists of radio dramas produced by Teatr Polskiego Radia for Channel 3 of the Polish Radio. The first part is the retrospective on the radio dramas with sound engineering by Andrzej Brzoska (the laureate of many Prix Italia awards and of Festiwal Dwa Teatry in Sopot). The selection was made with the Idiom: oh man, oh machine / człowiek-maszyna in mind. Our review shows how sound design has evolved since the beginning of 1980s until today.

The radio drama is also an intelligent criticism of the present-day media which delude their audience, immersing them in non-reality which wants to imitate or even become the reality.

The second part of Silent Malta 2013 will be MPOMiejska Powieść Odcinkowa [City Novel in Instalments] – the project of Krzysztof Warlikowski’s Nowy Teatr produced together with the Channel 3 of the Polish Radio. Originally, MPO was a novel in ten instalments. We prepared a mini novel for Malta Festival Poznań consisting of 5 instalments, each of which was written by a different author, making references to a specific city. The writers shared consecutive episodes and on their basis wrote their own parts. It is a kind of literature-based city game which in its original version was accompanied by the distribution of a comic strip in some cities. The first and last instalment was created by prose writers: Sylwia Chutnik and Bartosz Żurawiecki (Warsaw and Poznań, where the authors come from, are the link). The middle instalments were the responsibility of playwrights who test their abilities in prose: Tomasz Man, Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and Krzysztof Bizio (Wrocław, Warsaw, Szczecin). The author of the idea is Piotr Gruszczyński - the dramaturge of Nowy Teatr. Barbara Marcinik and Andrzej Brzoska are responsible for production. Wojciech Dobrosz is the publisher. Performed by the actors of Teatr Nowy.

The third part of Silent Malta is the presentation of one of Channel 3 - “Trójka’s” productions of audio novels. It is a contemporary game with the convention of western – Patrick de Witt’s novel The Sisters Brothers. Featuring the brothers, Paweł and Rafał Królikowski. We received Nick de Witt’s, the author’s brother, permission to use his music.

Barbara Marcinik, Polish Radio Channel 3

rsquo;s life. The radio drama received the Prix Italia distinction in 1978.

  • Man – machine – it could appear that such a juxtaposition indicates a fight, a conflict. Music that you will listen to as part of channel 2 proves, however, that is does not have to be the case. It is people who create machines and them who decide how they will use the machines. Drums, a laptop, samples of sounds recorded in an old factory can all be used to create the industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails, but the same set enables you to make enchanting pieces in the style of the daydreamers from Efterklang, melancholic songs of The National and disconcerting, mysterious compositions of Portishead. It depends solely on an artist which of his/her faces he/she prefers to show.
