GallerySocietas Raffaello Sanzio / Romeo Castellucci "Inferno"
  • The triptych drawing on the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri had its premiere in 2008 at the Theatre Festival in Avignon and was deemed by “Le Monde” the most important cultural production of the first decade of 21st century. In the Divine Comedy Castellucci does not aim at a stage representation of the images described by Dante. Inferno attempts to show, using melancholic images, the mental state of a man at the end of 20th and the beginning of 21st century - his sadness, fears and despair; Purgatorio is a shocking picture of earthly life and the relation of the man with God; Paradiso - an installation, whose inaccessibility is experienced individually and physically. As the director says: “To read, interpret anew, spread, dig in the inside of the Divine Comedy, so that we can forget it. Absorb it through epidermis. Let it dry on me like a wet shirt.” Castellucci’s dramatic strategy rests on highlighting the violent nature of the image and appealing to emotions. The object of visualisation is not so much the meaning hidden in the text as the emotions distilled from a chosen motif, thread or word.
